How to Make VCDs
Part 3: Chaptering the VCD

This part of the tutorial is completely optional. However if you do not have a burning tool like Nero that makes VCDs for you then read on.

Chapters. What are they? Well, when you watch a DVD there are two types of 'fast-forward' and 'rewind' buttons on your controller. One set is for actually moving back and forth (like a videotape) in the movie, and the other is jumping back and forth by whole sections of the movie. These sections are called chapters. Just like a DVD, VCDs can also be chaptered.

To do this chaptering we will use VCDwizard. Basically what it does is write the chaptering information and wrap the whole package into a CD image which you can burn with any respectable CD burning program. Very nice.

VCD WizardWhen you start up VCDwizard you will be presented with a screen (shown on the right). Select 'VideoCD 2.0' and hit OK.
A new dialog will appear. Now open Windows Explorer and locate the encoded MPG files you made in the last part with DVDx. Drag the file that is disc 1 into the 'Track List'. VCDwizard will process for a bit (a minute or two) to make sure the file is fit for a VCD. A progress bar will be filled down the bottom of the dialog ('Disk Total'). If it is red and over 80 mins then your file is too big. Guess what. You will have to reencode it at a lower bit-rate (quality) to make it fit on a CD.

VCD WizardNow you can set the chapters. Note that if you do not want chapters you can just skip it and press 'Next' straight away. Open the rip of the DVD you made in Part 2 in DVDx (like you did in part 2) and go to 'Output Settings' and then 'Settings' (making sure 'Custom Chapter' is set in 'Volume don't exceed'.

Select Chapter 1. Only Chapter 1 and nothing else. Now look at the 'Selected Time'. This is the time that Chapter 2 starts (VCDwizard provides a Chapter 1, which obviously starts at the track time of 0:0:0) Switch back to VCDwizard (don't close DVDx), select the track in the list, and then enter the time into the 'Manual Positioning' text boxes. Now click 'Set Entry' to make it so. Now switch back to DVDx and select Chapter 2 (keeping Chapter 1 selected). The time now displayed is now Chapter 3's position. Put this into the 'Manual Positioning' boxes and press 'Set Entry'. Keep doing this until you cannot set any more Chapters in VCDwizard because the track isn't long enough. It doesn't matter that you have not used all the chapters in DVDx, remember this is only disc 1.

Now hit 'Next'. This will bring up bunch of settings. Make sure you are in the PVD tab. Change 'Volume Label' to something descriptive, since it is the title of the disc. I recommend the name of the movie and the disc number. Remove your name from 'Publisher ID'. Now press 'Next' to continue.

Another display will come up. Drag your 'stream' from the 'Streams' box to the 'PBC' box. PBC is the thing the DVD player uses to move from chapter to chapter. A little dialog will come up. Select 'PlayList' and hit 'OK'. Press 'Next'

Another screen will come up. Make sure you are in the 'lkVCDxBuild' tab and click 'Get Version of VCDxBuild'. Switch to the 'Advanced' tab and make sure 'cue/bin' is selected under 'CD-Image Type'. This ensures compatability with most CD burning software. 'Verbosity' should be 'Normal'. Switch back to the 'lkVCDxBuild' tab and click 'Browse for Target-file'. Select where you want to create this CD-image of the VCD and name it, the hit 'Save'. Now we are ready to create the image. Press 'Finish'. The video file will be scanned and the image created. When it is finished you can close VCDwizard. If you have more than one CD to make open VCDwizard again.

When you come to do the second CD of the VCD do everything the same except for the chaptering. In DVDx note what chapter you finished on (for example chapter 13) then 'Unselect All'. Now click on the next chapter on the list from the last one you had selected before (using before mentioned example it would be Chapter 14). This will show the time of the first chapter on the second disc. Now use the same method as before to chapter the VCD.

The VCD has been ripped, encoded, chaptered and now is ready to burn. Part 4, the finale, awaits us.
